Building Cardboard City

If I ask you to build a replica of the city with cardboard and only cardboard, where would you start?

I had no idea where to even begin. But thankfully they asked EP, not me, because he knew what to do right away.

He started in IKEA. We hunted for cardboard up down the aisles. There are a few particular type that’s good for specific purpose, he said.

Then off to the drawing board he went. I asked him to draw it out just so I can see what his vision was. 9934a8_33ef677be2ba4cdbb393f0b4d7f7e65c-mv2

Then it’s laser cutting time! It’s his first time cutting with a laser cutter and it definitely saved a lot of time! Just imagine cutting all these pieces by hand.9934a8_1302d63afca84ae2a1ed1ec73b699e4b-mv2_d_3840_2160_s_2

Just look at how thin it is!

He worked tirelessly on this project in preparation for the inaugural Vancouver Mural Festival. It was really inspiring to see him in action, working on what he’s passionate about.

People absolutely loved it. This video barely represents the amount of hard work Eric put in to his cardboard city but it’s something! I love hearing the ooh’s and aah’s as the passerby’s at Vancouver Mural Festival and how excited they were to paint their own “murals”.

The Most Magical Night

It has been over a month since we celebrated the resort’s third anniversary yet I still can’t get over it. How could I? It was a magical evening and everything I have dreamt and planned for turned into a reality. It was more beautiful than anything I could ever imagine and I’m glad the guests and staff felt the electrifying energy too.

Every detail was carefully crafted as I did not want to leave anything out. I was a control freak, I admit, but I knew I had to if I wanted it to be magical.

As I have shared on April 20, it all started with an idea of having mermaids at the anniversary party. Indeed, the mermaids drove the whole concept and we decided on “Threemendous Sunset at the Enchanted Garden of Le Méridien Bali Jimbaran”. The evening enchanted our 450 guests with our lush tropical garden and one-in-a-kind 1,300sqm saltwater lagoon area.

Guests were greeted with the magical appearances of stunning mermaids from Mermaid.Inc, accompanied by fairytale-themed music from Bali Classical Lounge.

To kick off the evening, guests were invited to release beautiful butterflies of various species from all over the Indonesian archipelago to give them a new home in the gardens. The butterfly release stunned many of guests and added a magical sight along with the stunning golden dusk as the sun sets.

The celebration continued with cake cutting ceremony of a one-and-half meter signature éclair tower along with the thrown of real flower petal confetti.

Acro and fire dance performance from Dwi & Eka, the grand finalists of ‘Indonesia Mencari Bakat’ also enlivened the evening, followed by fashion show by Air Resorts & Swimwear, Uluwatu Handmade Balinese Lace, and Aryuna Jewelry, worn by models from Yongki Model Management, and the groovy tunes from Bali’s rising DJ Shissy Bvlagry.

Aside from the actual celebration itself, we had to keep the guests busy while we work on putting and setting up the magic in the pool area. So we had Uluwatu Lace Demonstration and Flower Crown Making at the lobby and they were both so well received by the audience.

The day after, we also hosted A Day at Sea – an experience to know a life of a local fisherman, and other engaging activities were also specially prepared to take all the guests’ experience to the whole new level during this extraordinary jubilee.

It was truly a magical night and I could not have done it without the immense support of the team, the family, EP, our entertainers and partners. I wish I could replay the moment and slow mo it.

Can’t get enough? Me too. Watch the video here.

This event marks a few career achievements for me:

  • Efficient planning
  • Creative thinking and problem solving
  • Enhanced leadership skills
  • DIY’d backdrop
  • Event styling
  • Project management
  • Internal/external communication

Those are just a few things I learned during this whole process and I am just glad to have had the chance.

Preparing for the hotel’s anniversary party

Here we are, just 2 weeks away from the Hotel’s third anniversary!

If you have been following my snapchat or instagram, you would know that I have been working on the concept for this upcoming anniversary party since January. It’s been such a fun and creative process, definitely something I enjoy doing. It reminds me of the days when I was convinced I wanted to be an event planner. But hey, maybe it’s not too late?

For the past few anniversaries, I have been involved on the design side and mostly just for collaterals. This year, I get to be in the driver’s seat and obviously I took this opportunity to make it our best celebration yet. At first we were going to hire an event planner to help us organize the event but after meeting with three, I realized it would be much cheaper if we were to do it ourselves and we can also control the quality of the entertainment we provide too! So from there, we started researching entertainers that would help bring this party to life.

I spent hours sitting by the pool side one day and it just hit me.. I want mermaids to be there. I had no idea where I would hire mermaids or how cheesy it would be, but much to my surprise, mermaiding is actually on the rise in Bali. I had no idea! Once I have confirmed the mermaids, it really set the tone for everything else. Then came the strings players, the acro dancers, the fashion show.. Everything just flow.

There is so many things I learned along the way. For example, Indonesians are just so creative and responsive. It was so easy to find anything I needed, whether it was through Instagram, Tokopedia, or just good ol’ Google. They pretty much everything and do it so inexpensively. We pretty much found our goody bag supplier, mermaid, swimwear designer, models from Instagram.

Now two weeks before the event, I just finished the design for the invitation and currently working on the photo backdrop.

The goody bag has been ordered, the decorations have been discussed, the sponsors are happy, the media have been identified. Now we just have to make sure we forward the invitation to as many people as possible!

More about the event soon..

#AussieDay & #CNY2016 at Le Méridien Bali Jimbaran

We love celebrations.

Just a few days ago, we celebrated #AussieDay because most of our in house guests on that day were Australians.

Looking a week ahead, we will have a large number of Chinese travelers and so it just makes sense to decorate the hotel accordingly.

Who’s behind these stellar decorations? Our Housekeeping team. I love how vibrant these decorations are and how they create such a different mood to the hotel.

The Sublime ALS Challenge

Two nights ago I got nominated by Diana Luong to participate in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. For those of you that has been living under a rock, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is, ironically, the hottest social media trend this July / August 2014. While the challenge wasn’t originally associated with ALS, it sure has created a huge buzz on social media and the ASL Association has benefited quite a bit from it.

To be quite honest, I’ve been living under a rock myself. I didn’t know what ALS was and was only intrigued to learn about it after seeing the trend.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. The sad thing about is, there is only one cure that has been approved by FDA.

This popular challenge has shine some light on this disease and the association reported that they’ve received over $31.5 million as of Aug 20 2014. That’s $29.6 million MORE than this time last year. It’s incredible and this is truly the power of social media when it’s put to good use.

For my submission, I decided to do something fun. I’m super thankful my buddy, Serge, agreed to help me out with the special effects at such short notice. The result is quite incredible.

So have you done the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge? What’s your thought about this trend?

Videos of Julian’s Birthday & @CraftedVan’s Booth at #GotCraft

Once in awhile, I like to challenge myself and push my own boundaries, especially in a creative sense. Over the last year, I’ve starting to realize I enjoy filming. Though I’m not good at it, I always look for opportunities to practice and do more and this weekend, two opportunities showed up: 1) my nephew’s 5th birthday party 2) Craft’ed booth at GotCraft.

For the last few years, Julian’s birthday party has always been held at home and this was the first time it was held somewhere else. It was also my first time going to Koko’s so I had no idea what the lighting and the space was going to be like. To my surprise, the colours on the video turned out really well. Chasing after super hyper 5 year olds are not the easiest, so I mostly just filmed them when they’re sitting down and eating their food but I’m glad I got to capture some precious moments. This video was also a surprise for my sister who worked so hard to get all the decoration ready. Just look at how amazing everything is!

After the birthday party, I rushed to see a friend in Yaletown and since we didn’t end up shopping for long, I decided to check out GotCraft. When I got there around 4, it was pretty busy and the Craft’ed booth was one of the busier ones. I made my way there and said hi to the two creatives behind the brand, Erica and Diana. As expected, they have the biggest smiles as they greeted everyone to their booth. Their display and cute characters won my heart right away and made it so easy to film their booth. Again, I’m happy the colours turned out well and somehow I was able to handle the camera well this time. Usually I would get a shake or a jerk here and there, but this short video is just oh so smooth!

I’m looking forward to the next opportunity to film again because it’s just so fun. A great break from typing and staring at my computer all day 🙂

See-You-Later Cards for @DianaLuong_ & @SamLin86

Diana is going to Hawaii for vacation for a week, which means I won’t have a lunch buddy for the next few days at work. She has been working and studying tirelessly for the last few years that I’ve known her, so I know she’s been looking forward to this trip and I can understand why!

Sam and I started off as being Twitter friends, but when we decided to meet a few months ago, magic happened. He’s very fun to talk to and I’m bummed to hear the news that he just bought a one way ticket to Singapore. I’m excited to hear about his adventures and I know he’ll do well wherever he decides to settle.

So to bid them both a farewell-for-now, I made a card for each!

For @DianaLuong_

For @SamLin86

I love how their face lit up when I gave them the card. Little did they know that it made me very happy to see such my simple cards get appreciated. I guess it’s true that at the end of the day, it’s always the little things that matter. 🙂

#CrafteriaFun Recap

Ever since I first saw my sister Trixie made her own card and scrapbook, I’ve always wanted to work on my creativity and buy a huge load of scrapbooking materials to decorate everything with. Years passed by and I haven’t finished one scrapbook yet, but have done a handful of birthday and lovey dovey cards. Then I met Diana, a master crafter, and after attempting to have our own craft night, I realized how much fun it would be to have a craft night where everyone can just DIY anything they want.

Right before coming up with this idea, we both also attended an Etsy Craft Party and though it was a lot of fun, but the space was too crammed and there were serious lack of scissors and tape. What went well was the amount of different free materials to choose from.

So one day, when Diana and I were on our usual bus ride home, I asked her if she’s interested in hosting a craft night with 10-15 people at the office. She immediately said yes and we were on. We came up with the name Crafteria fairly quickly and registered it across all the top social networks.

Fast forward to August 24th 2013, we had about 30 people joining us in craft that night. We had some expert knitter, friendly hoarders, DIY newbs, two playful dogs, and one cute baby. We had people bringing and sharing their materials and lending their skills. Some even left their high quality stuff with us for next time.

The night flew by and everyone seemed to really be enjoying their time and I was happy to be able to capture the moment through the lens of my camera.

So many of the attendees were also asking us when the next one would be, which is also a good indicator of the success of the event. But when is the next event? We don’t know yet, but hopefully soon. Crafting has never been this fun!

DIY #Minion Birthday Card for @MariTostes87

Marina is one of the cutest people I have ever met in my life. Everything she does is just so adorable and it’s no surprise that she loves the minions from Despicable Me (although may be not as much as she loves wiener dogs). So for her birthday, I knew I wanted to make a card combining a few of her favourite things: a minion, Menchies yogurt bowl / cupcake (depends how you see it), and something pink.

ImageEver since making the card for Diana, I don’t think I can ever go back to flat design although it seems to be the thing now on UX. So for Marina’s card, I just did a simple 3D effect with the arms extending out, holding the pink cupcake/yogurt bowl.

Imageand of course, I have to write down M in his pocket. The M both stands for Marina and Minions.

ImageTo go along with the card, I got her a cupcake key caps and some Dylan’s Candy Bar post its and pens that are just as sweet as she is!

Screen Shot 2013-06-19 at 12.04.41 PM

I’m happy to have her as a coworker and as a friend. There are a lot of things we have in common, like our love for Disney, traveling, and everything cute. I can’t wait to go to Disneyworld this October with her and a few other coworkers! Though I have been to all Disneylands and Disneyworld that exist in the world, it would be my first time going with friends.

DIY #MonstersInc card for @dianaluong_

Though I did not know Diana well while I was in University, but I feel so grateful to work with her now. She’s very talented in making anything look super cute and awesome. Her creativity, skills, and humility is just so inspiring. Somehow, she just makes everything better and she does it without knowing.

It took me awhile to think of what I should buy and make for Diana’s graduation because I am just so intimidated by her creativity, but I knew I wanted to make her something that’s very her. So I picked up my scissors, a few scrapbook paper, and away I go.

This was my first time making a pop-up card and I must admit, I was quite surprised by how well it turned out given that I didn’t look at tutorials online or did any planning beforehand. I’m glad that the inspiration hit me just in time for her graduation as well. I hope she likes it 🙂
